Modest rather than respectable is the best description of the performance of this week’s highest new entry, the Aretha Frankin biopic Respect. This only managed third place, but beat rival new releases Malignant and Copshop. Disney’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings continues to dominate, taking nearly £12m in two weeks. Its reign will no doubt continue until the Bond flick, No Time to Die, pitches up to swallow every available screen on September 30. The big question is whether the superhero/martial arts crossover flick will have time to beat the £20.4m post-lockdown record set by Peter Rabbit 2. Outside the top ten, The Last Bus continues to prove a winner among the midweek pensioner matinee crowd.
