Idris Elba’s djinn proved to be no box office tonic as the weekend’s highest charting new release, Three Thousand Years of Longing, only managed to crawl into tenth place on the chart. The chief beneficiary of Saturday’s National Cinema Day, which saw ticket prices pegged at £3, was Minions: The Rise of Gru. This returned to the top after ten weeks on release. Also still doing a roaring trade is Top Gun: Maverick, which rose to number three on its 15th week in the chart. The hit sequel now occupies ninth place in the UK all-time box office top ten, with Star Wars: The Last Jedi next in its sights. The extended ‘more fun version’ of Spider-Man: No Way Home returned to the chart, as did Spielberg’s ET, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. But what about hoofer Michael Flatley’s self-reinvention as an action star with Blackbird? That took a grand total of £51,489 from 105 cinemas.
