So who wants to know what happens next to the adult Losers at the hands of Pennywise the dancing clown? Not as many people as Warners might have hoped. Sure, It: Chapter Two topped the chart as anticipated. But Chapter One took £10m during its opening weekend two years ago. Chapter Two could ‘only’ manage £7.3m – and that was with those Thursday night previews. Polish political drama Polityka was the second-highest charting new release, possibly because Poles living in the UK need a break from the nasty whiff of xenophobia about our own increasingly preposterous politics. In its eighth week on release, Disney’s The Lion King continues to ascend the UK all-time top ten. It has now usurped both Beauty and the Beast and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part Two to claim eighth place. Outside the top ten, several well-received art house movies are doing very well indeed. Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory has notched up more than £1m, The Souvenir is on course to become Joanna Hogg’s biggest hit, and Bristol’s very own Bait recorded a remarkable 37% increase in takings during its second weekend on release to reach a total of £140,000.
