Bristol director’s short horror film is up for a $10,000 prize
A distressed young woman sets out to scatter her late mother’s ashes. But the deceased biddy’s remains don’t want to go quietly. And it soon becomes clear that their relationship had something of a dark side.
Bristol writer/director Ben Steiner’s atmospheric spooker Urn was commissioned by Fox for Hulluween, the inaugural online horror festival from US streaming channel Hulu. “Urn is inspired by the classic BBC Christmas ghost stories which are very character driven and spooky rather than gory,” Ben tells us. “They also feature some unfortunate person unleashing supernatural forces they can’t contain which was a perfect fit for Hulu’s brief of ‘no going back’”.
The film is now competing against seven other shorts from around the world for a $10K prize. They will all be streaming on Hulu throughout October. They’re also available to watch on Hulu’s YouTube channel and Instagram’s new video streaming platform, IGTV.
is needed now More than ever
Urn‘s star is Cardiff-based Alex Reid, whom you may remember being polished off with a pick to the back of the neck two-thirds of the way through The Descent. By happy coincidence, this is back on screen in Redcliffe Caves during Bristol Film Festival’s upcoming Horror in the Caves weekend.

This isn’t the first time that Ben has had to make room in his trophy cabinet. His first collaboration with producer Dan Dixon as Fume Films, body horror/crime thriller The Stomach, won 25 international awards during its festival run and is being developed into a feature with backing from Creative England.

His oeuvre also includes The Flea and the award-winning comedy-horror short Clanker Man.
