Bristol spotting in the Stan & Ollie trailer

By Kat Everett  Wednesday Sep 19, 2018

The Bristol docks outside M Shed doubles as an Irish port in Stan & Ollie, a film due for release in January 2019 which tells the story of the comic duo rekindling their careers in post-war Britain.

But you’ve got to look closely during the newly released trailer for the film which gets its premiere at October’s London Film Festival, where it has been selected for the closing film slot.

Steve Coogan is Stan and John C Reilly is Ollie, with filming taking place on Prince’s Wharf and around the Hippodrome in April 2017.

The Balmoral, now moored on Hotwell Road away from her usual berth, plays a starring role in the trailer as the ship in which Laurel and Hardy arrive in Ireland.

It’s a celebratory scene, with Irish tricolors joining the US stars and stripes and bunting strung across what is usually the departure point for the Bristol harbour railway.

Earlier this year, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society also used the Balmoral – this time with Bristol acting as a double for Weymouth.

Full steam ahead for the Balmoral

The pair are greeted by cheering crowds

Bristol is featured for a third time in the trailer, with the stage door of the Hippodrome on Denmark Street making an appearance as ‘Queen’s Hall’.

The duo did appear once on the Hippodrome stage, on September 29 1952.
