Bristol Film Festival’s Winter programme unveiled
Bristol Film Festival returns to what’s billed, imaginatively, as ‘Bristol’s very own Hogwarts’, for the first events of its winter season. You can see each of the first three Harry Potter flicks (Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Azkaban) on successive days at Clifton College Chapel from Saturday 9 December. There are two screenings each day – afternoon and evening.
If you crave more festive Bristol Film Festival treats, head down to Arnos Vale Cemetery on Wednesday 13 for The Nightmare Before Christmas and Home Alone. These are followed by a suitably gothy late night screening of Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands.
Averys Wine Cellars is a regular festival venue for upmarket boozy events. This month you can catch a 60th anniversary screening of the Sean Connery Bond movie From Russia With Love (Dec 14), two showings of the evergreen It’s a Wonderful Life (Dec 15 & 16), Die Hard (Dec 19) and The Godfather – with wine and pizza (Dec 20).
is needed now More than ever
The festival is also launching its first Christmas in the Caves weekend in Redcliffe Caves. First up is the original Robin Williams Jumanji (Dec 15), followed by Batman Returns (Dec 15) and two screenings of the best Christmas movie ever: The Muppet Christmas Carol, obviously (Dec 16 & Dec 17). The rest of the caves programme comprises a mix of family favourites and horror fun, which always goes down a treat below ground: Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Dec 16), The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: The Chronicles of Narnia (Dec 16), Gremlins (Dec 16), Krampus (Dec 16), Frozen (Dec 17), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Dec 17), The Princess Bride (Dec 17), and that ever-popular Horror in the Caves selection, The Descent (Dec 17).
It’s up to the Clifton Observatory for the next batch of screenings on Dec 21: a double bill of The Snowman and The Snowman & the Snowdog, plus Scrooged and When Harry Met Sally.
The season concludes with a 20th anniversary screening of Elf, which we’re encouraged to believe now qualifies as a Christmas classic, at The Mount Without on Dec 22.
