Bristol Science Film Festival eviscerates giant mutant sharks
Remember Deep Blue Sea? Renny Harlin’s daft killer mutant shark flick from the turn of the millennium is the very definition of a guilty pleasure. Now the Bristol Science Film Festival has got Saffron Burrows, Samuel L. Jackson and chums in its sights.
Each year, the festival picks on a particularly preposterous slice of mainstream entertainment and has enormous fun with its scientific shortcomings. A full screening of the film in question is regularly interrupted by a panel of chortling boffins, whose interjections add to the fun. Last year, they demolished The Core. This year, Deep Blue Sea will be vivisected on the slab of reason at the Bristol Improv Theatre on Thursday 16 August.
The 2018 festival kicks off with a themed Science Film Trail around four city centre venues from 10:30am on Saturday 11. On Tue 13, The Science of Rick and Morty is explored at the Bristol Improv Theatre, with particular reference to fan-favourite episode Pickle Rick.
is needed now More than ever
The week of events climaxes with a free outdoor screening of new short science films from around the world, drawn from the fest’s competition shortlist. This takes place in Millennium Square on Sunday 19 from 7:30pm.
