Bristol spotting in the new Hellboy trailer

By Martin Booth  Thursday Dec 20, 2018

The Hellboy trailer has got millions of views since being released, but only the most eagle of eyed might have spotted a Bristol location taking pride of place.

Hellboy returns to cinemas on April 12 2019 starring David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane and Daniel Dae Kim.

One of the first scenes in the trailer shows the demon caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human standing looking out across Bristol from Waring House in Redcliffe.

Waring House in Redcliffe features in the new Hellboy trailer

Later in the trailer, Hellboy is back in Waring House, talking to Dae Kim, best known for his role as Jin Soo Kwon in TV series Lost, and McShane, still known to many as Lovejoy from the early 90s BBC show of the same name.

Waring House was also used as a location for the 2011 Doctor Who episode, Night Terrors, when Matt Smith was the Doctor.

Waring House, Francombe House and Underdown House form a U-shape looking onto a shared courtyard. The blocks sit on the corner of Redcliff Hill and Commercial Road.

Waring House opened in 1960, made up of 79 three-bed flats, which went for 64 shillings and 4 pence to rent (roughly £3.20) per week including hot water, laundry and heating.

The complex, which has 187 flats in total, was built for “key workers” (including staff at the hospital) in the city centre in a wave of modernist projects which also included the Barton Hill flats and Dove Street in Kingsdown.

The blocks here replaced a historic almshouse destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. The bombing also destroyed shops in the Redcliffe area and so a parade of new ones were added at the bottom.

Supported by Bristol Film Office, the Hellboy production team shot in Bristol over two nights in September 2017, with SWAT teams, firearms and armoured vehicles.

Also released in cinemas in 2019 will be Stan & Ollie, which sees Bristol’s Floating Harbour doubling for the Irish docks, with filming also taking place at the Bristol Hippodrome, which features as the exterior of a variety hall on the comedy duo’s tour.
