Bristol’s week in film: June 11-17 2021

This week’s big release is the much-acclaimed dementia drama The Father, for which Anthony Hopkins unexpectedly became the oldest person ever to win a Best Actor Oscar.

There’s also a preview of Ben Wheatley’s hallucinogenic In the Earth – the very first post-covid pandemic folk horror.

If it’s classics you’re after, we have a strong bunch of reissues, led by the welcome 25th anniversary return of the Coen brothers’ Fargo. Also celebrating an anniversary (its 30th) is Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking Thelma and Louise. This was controversial enough in its time, but what will what will cancel culture enthusiasts make of it? Or, indeed, of David Cronenberg’s brilliant Crash, which is back in restored 4K form? Also restored in 4K is the early post-colonial African cinema classic Mandabi. Should crooning and hoofing be more to your taste, Rob Marshall’s Chicago returns to the big screen too.
