Cinema Rediscovered announces free outdoor screenings of Flash Gordon and Black Panther
As if you needed any additional reasons to attend Cinema Rediscovered, Bristol’s third annual celebration of rare and restored cinema classics has just provided one. Presumably buoyed by the recent run of unusually clement weather, the event is venturing outdoors for the first time for two free al fresco screenings in Museum Square (just outside the M Shed Café and near the Matthew and Wapping Wharf).
It always seemed rather odd that Cinema Rediscovered was bringing Bristol-born director Mike Hodges back to the city to talk about his best films (including the classic Get Carter and under-appreciated Pulp) without celebrating his contribution to cult cinema: Flash Gordon, featuring bellowing Brian (“Gordon’s aliiive!”) Blessed and that cracking Queen soundtrack. Now we know why. They’ve been secretly working on an al fresco screening on Friday 27 July, introduced by Mr. Hodges himself. The following evening, you can catch Marvel’s ground-breaking hit Black Panther.
You don’t need a ticket for either event, but are advised to pitch up early to grab a decent spot. Limited seating will be available, so you might want to bring your own blankets and cushions. The screenings kick off at 8:15pm on both evenings with a selection of short films. These will be followed by an introduction to the main feature. Mike Hodges is joined by broadcaster Samira Ahmed to set the scene for Flash Gordon. Black Panther will be introduced by Adam Murray.
