Clickbait catnip alert as hit feline flick heads for Bristol

By Robin Askew  Tuesday May 9, 2017

If you love movies about our beastly domestic companions, but the sentimental, anthropomorphised A Dog’s Purpose made you want to projectile vomit all over the multiplex, salvation is at hand. It’s just been announced that the film described as “the Citizen Kane of cat documentaries” is to get a UK release on June 30. The Watershed is booking it as you read this page.

Shot over the course of two months, Turkish filmmaker Ceyda Torun’s Kedi (it means ‘feline’ in Turkish) is a film about the street cats of Istanbul.

Let’s see how many pictures of cats we can fit on one page

For hundreds of thousands of years, hordes of moggies have wormed their way into locals’ lives, enjoying life on the streets without becoming the property of ‘owners’. Local residents, in turn, see it as their responsibility to look after the furballs, but not to imprison them in their homes or ghastly hipster cat cafes.

Here’s another one

From an initial shortlist of 35, Torun and her team selected seven cats to follow, each of whom has a distinctive personality: Sari (aka The Hustler), Bengü (The Lover), Aslan Parçasi (The Hunter), Psikopat (The Psycho), Deniz (The Social Butterfly), Duman (The Gentleman) and Gamsiz (The Player).  They also designed a bespoke rig for capturing the critters’ everyday lives at street level.

Isn’t this one cute?

Kedi was received rapturously by critics (“a splendidly graceful and quietly magical documentary” – Variety) and has proven to be audience catnip in the USA, which probably explains why it’s getting a swift UK release. After opening in just one cinema in New York, it went on to become a box office sensation, taking a remarkable $2.5 million to date.
