Climate action film screenings and discussions in Bristol and Bath
How do we break Britain’s dependence on oil? That’s the question posed by Emma Davie’s new documentary, The Oil Machine, which reminds us that this is a relatively new phenomenon driven by the discovery of North Sea oil fields back in the 1970s.
The documentary brings together a wide range of voices – oil company executives, economists, young activists, workers, scientists, and pension fund managers – to explore the complexities of transitioning away from oil and gas at a time when the licensing of new North Sea oil fields continues in direct contradiction of the Paris Climate Agreement.
There are screenings in Bristol and Bath, each of which is followed by a discussion of the issues raised. The Bristol event takes place on Tuesday 13 December at the Watershed, followed by a panel discussion hosted by Eliz Mizon, whose participants include theatre producer and Just Stop Oil/XR Bristol activist Chloe Naldrett, Adblock Bristol member Robbie Gillette, and the film’s award-winning soundtrack composer Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres. Go here for tickets. The following evening (Wednesday 14 December), The Oil Machine is showing at the Little Theatre cinema in Bath. Participants in the discussion following this screening include Bath Green Party parliamentary candidate Dominic Tristram; Sara Grimes, Head of Community Business Development for Bath & West Community Energy, and Chair of Transition Bath; Arfa Shahid, member of the Pakistan delegation to COP27; and scientist and climate activist John Leach. Tickets for this event are available here.
