Compass Presents launches Cult Film Camaraderie Club
Based in the Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio, Community Interest Company Compass Presents has been responsible for some of the most imaginative expanded cinema events in Bristol over the last few years. They’ve unleashed The Wicker Man with pagan romping in the Boiling Wells Amphitheatre, sailed into the harbour aboard the tall ship Kaskelot bearing a cargo of archive films and circus performances, and won national acclaim for their immersive Caligari Experience, which bagged the 2105 Media Innovation Award for best event.
At this time of year, the Compass team would normally be announcing their summer programme. Inevitably, the lockdown has clipped their wings somewhat. But they refuse to be daunted: “Over the last few weeks, we have been experimenting with online platforms, running practice screenings for friends and generally getting our heads around how we can do this. Where we would once have a production team, dedicated tech people and a whole host of excellent collaborators (not to mention a budget!) in the new world it’s just the two of us! Two women who adore what we do, hell bent on a mission!”
Enter the Cult Film Camaraderie Club, which launches on Sunday 10 May with that great Britcom Withnail and I. “We’ll be bringing cult film classics, presented with a twist, live and direct to you in your living rooms,” they tell us. “Before each screening we’ll provide you with instructions on what you need to prepare, gather, make or collect in order to have an enhanced experience of the screening. Thanks to the powers of video conferencing we’ll all be watching together. So get ready to nestle into your sofa-cinema seat and smell the popcorn!”
