Cultpix comes to the Everyman cinema
The Everyman cinema has teamed up with streaming service Cultpix to bring a selection of outré films back to the big screen. But if you’re achingly woke, you may want to give the season a wide berth as these are all, to use the modern argot, ‘problematic’ in so many ways.
First up on Tuesday is a 4K restoration of She Freak. This 1967 exploitation horror is a loose unofficial remake of Tod Browning’s Freaks, which in turn scandalised 1930s society. An ultra-low-budget slice of sleaze set in redneck country, it centres on cynical waitress Jade Cochran (Claire Brennan) who marries the owner of a travelling freakshow for his money. When he’s murdered by her lover, she inherits the whole show but sows the seeds of her own destruction by firing Shorty the dwarf.

Anita: Swedish Nymphet. Yes, that really is the young Stellan Skarsgård
This is followed on November 16 by Anita: Swedish Nymphet. Titter ye not – it’s a serious investigation into the debilitating condition of nymphomania, which afflicts 17-year-old schoolgirl Anita (Swedish glamour model Christina Lindberg). Fortunately, there’s a psychiatrist on hand (the young Stellan Skarsgård, for it is really he) ready to deploy his new ‘rational-emotive’ therapy, which entails, you know, shagging her. Her parents, meanwhile, lose patience with her promiscuity, change the locks and have an orgy of their own. This 1973 sexploitation drama was described by Time Out as “ludicrous and melancholy”.
is needed now More than ever
Finally, there’s a good old-fashioned festive slasher on December 7. Introduced by horror expert Kim Newman, 1972’s Silent Night, Bloody Night (not to be confused with Silent Night, Deadly Night or its sequel) is the story of a chap who inherits a family estate built on the site of a former lunatic asylum. Alas, its inmates have broken out and now run the town. Naturally, he decides to pay a visit on Christmas Eve. See if you can guess what happens next. Interestingly, many of the cast of this one were former ‘Warhol superstars’. Watch out too for John Carradine in a supporting role.
Cultpix describes itself as the first global subscription community for genre film fans and says it “will not pass judgement, flag up trigger warnings or over-explain the films or the time they were created in. We believe that free-thinking, knowledgeable fans can make up their own minds.”
