Curzon launches online tag-a-tile
Clevedon’s historic Curzon community cinema has survived two world wars and isn’t about to be defeated by a pesky virus, even though it’s had to close its doors for the first time in 108 years. But the current lockdown has forced the charity that runs the old place to think laterally when it comes to their ongoing leaky roof appeal.
The popular tag-a-tile initiative offered supporters the opportunity to write messages on new roof tiles. Before the lockdown, this had raised £11,700, with 723 tiles tagged. That means there’s just £18,000 left to go before the cinema reaches its £100,000 community fundraising target (of the total £600,000 cost).

The site has been secured until the lockdown ends
Work began on the roof repairs last month, but contractors Corbel have now had to pause this and secure the site. The cinema closure means you can no longer scribble on your own tile, so enter . . . online tag-a-tile. Curzon CEO Susannah Shaw has taken a big pile of tiles home and will be tagging them on punters’ behalf. You’ll also get a photograph of your inscribed tile by email. The Curzon staff have kicked things off with their own poignant tile (pictured above). Who knows what our descendents, if any, will make of this if it’s exposed again during the next roof replacement in, oh, about a century’s time.
