Flash Gordon lands at Clifton Observatory

By Robin Askew  Wednesday Jul 1, 2015

Flash! Ah-aaah! Er, sorry. Tickets for Bristol Sunset Cinema‘s inaugural screening of The Princess Bride at Blaise Castle Estate have almost sold out. So they’ve been scurrying around trying to find another film and appropriate venue for a second outdoor show. Now it can be revealed: Flash Gordon – y’know, the one with the great Queen soundtrack – will be screened at the Clifton Observatory on Saturday, September 26. Tickets are on sale here, priced at a very reasonable £10/£5 (under 10s).

It’s a 35th anniversary outing for this camp classic reworking of those Buster Crabbe adventures from the 1930s. Our hunky American Football player hero Flash (Sam Jones) and chums travel to Planet Mongo to do battle with Ming the Merciless (Max Von Sydow) to save the Earth. Watch out for a winged and bellowing Brian Blessed as Hawkman Prince Vultan and a pre-Bond Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin.

Amazing trivia fact with which to impress your pals: producer Dino De Laurentiis originally wanted Federico Fellini to direct the film. Alas, the great Italian director turned him down. De Laurentiis got his revenge by naming Princess Aura’s pet, played by Deep Roy, Fellini.
