Free Don Giovanni screening in Millennium Square

By Robin Askew  Wednesday Jun 24, 2015

Mozart’s tragicomedy Don Giovanni will be broadcast live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to the big screen in Bristol’s Millennium Square on Friday, July 3. This is the first of two ROH summer screenings in the Square. Go here for full details of the previously announced satellite broadcast of Kenneth MacMillan’s ballet Romeo and Juliet on Tuesday, September 22.

For the uninitiated, Don Giovanni is the story of the eponymous promiscuous nobleman who shags his way across Europe. But when the incorrigible nobbing nob goes too far and commits murder, he unleashes ‘orrible vengeance from beyond the grave.

The Royal Opera’s Director of Opera Kasper Holten’s lightly comic production casts Christopher Maltman as Mozart’s anti-hero and shifts the emphasis towards an exploration of the nobleman’s womanising as an attempt to escape mortality. Set designs are by Es Devlin, whose credits include Les Troyens, the London Olympics Closing Ceremony 2012 and music concerts for performers such as Kanye West.

Inaugurated in 1987, BP Big Screens is organised in partnership with the Royal Opera House and has become a huge success. Last year, more than 47,000 people attended live satellite relays at venues across the country, which included screenings of La Boheme and Rigoletto in Millennium Square. This year, the BP Big Screen is visiting 21 locations across the UK.

The screening commences at 7pm. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so you’re advised to get there early. Picnics are welcome. Go here for more details and conditions of entry.
