Free live remix of Bristol lockdown film in Old Market
Back at the start of lockdown in March 2020, there was a plague of glum short films made by teenagers in their bedrooms. At the same time, Bristol-based expanded cinema curators Compass Presents set out to do something a little different. Oracles in Sepia sought to explore feelings of loss, connection and protest entirely through archive footage.
Compass Presents Director Charlie Harman made some unexpected discoveries while wading through those old clips. “When we started exploring the clips within the archive, we were surprised at how much of the imagery reminded us of the time we were living in despite it feeling so alien and unprecedented – whether that was clips of people vigorously washing their hands, or queuing at a supermarket or wearing masks. At the time, it was oddly comforting to see those familiar scenes.”
Oracles in Sepia was originally released online back in October 2020. Now it’s getting a new lease of life in a public setting, supported by Bristol City Council’s ‘Welcome Back’ fund and Film 2021 celebrations.
is needed now More than ever
You can see it on repeat in the shop window of Glitch Studio on Old Market Street for three nights from Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 March 2022, from 7pm-10pm. On Friday 25 from 7pm-10pm, there’s a live ‘VJ’ performance in the shop window to entertain passers-by. Bristol-based visual artist DJ Cheeba will remix the archive clips used in the film, adding local footage of protests and celebrations, alongside an electronic live set.
