Full Cinema Rediscovered programme goes on sale

By Robin Askew  Thursday Jun 9, 2022

The full programme for this year’s Cinema Rediscovered has now been revealed as tickets go on sale for individual events. As we previously reported, the sixth edition runs from July 20-24 at the Watershed, Arnolfini, Clevedon’s Curzon cinema and 20th Century Flicks before going on a UK-wide tour later in the year.

This year’s celebration of film restorations, rediscoveries and curiosities boasts eight strands, many of which include UK premieres.

DJ Cheeba prepares to get Lynchian on your ass

There are now even more highlights in addition to the ones we previously mentioned. The UK premiere of the new 4K restoration of David Lynch’s Lost Highway will be followed by a Lynch-inspired DJ/VJ set by DJ Cheeba.

Archive activists Invisible Women and guests promise a provocative discussion entitled Rewriting Film History (With the Women In It), conjuring up an alternative history of the medium to the dominant male-centric one.

In Designing a Character, Creating a Star, former V&A curator Keith Lodwick explores how costume designers Gilbert Adrian and Travis Banton were central to creating the images of 1930s screen stars Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich.

Director Charlie Shackleton will be present to introduce and discuss the spooky The Afterlight – a cinematic collage of early 20th century cinema featuring more than 300 long-deceased actors who retain a presence in the form of their performances on celluloid.

Hugh Quarshie and unappealing nipper in Clive Barker’s Nightbreed

Bristol Black Horror Club presents a rare screening of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, featuring David Cronenberg’s first major acting role (as a masked serial killer, obviously), with an introduction by programmer and writer Adam Murray.

Two of the great institutions that make our region unique are also celebrated. Buy a ticket to see the Marlene Dietrich classic Shanghai Express and you’ll also have an opportunity to nose around behind the scenes at Clevedon’s historic Curzon cinema, including a look at the projection booth and a demonstration of the Christie organ.

Dave Taylor and Daisy Steinhardt of 20th Century Flicks await their customer stampede

Down at 20th Century Flicks, Dave Taylor and Daisy Steinhardt present a discussion entitled I Assure You We’re Open, which attempts to solve the eternal mystery of how the world’s oldest video shop manages to keep going after 40 years.

We’re just scratching the surface here. The full programme can be found at the Cinema Rediscovered website, where you can also purchase tickets.
