Geoff Barrow soundtracks sci-fi thriller
Portishead founder Geoff Barrow has joined forces with soundtrack composer Ben Salisbury to create the score for AI thriller Ex Machina. This is the directorial debut of The Beach author Alex Garland, whose film credits include the screenplays for 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go and the Dredd reboot. Ex Machina, which is also written by Garland, is the tale of a coder (Domhnall Gleeson) who’s recruited by his billionaire internet company boss (Oscar Isaac) to take part in a Turing Test with a hot robot lady (Alicia Vikander). As usual with AI stories, we can expect a twist.
This is the second time that Barrow and Salisbury have worked together, as they previously composed the soundtrack for Garland’s earlier Dredd. You can hear excerpts of their moody, synthy work in the film’s US trailer [left] but not, for some bizarre reason, in the just-released UK one. Ex Machina opens nationwide on Jan 23, 2015.
