Maisie Williams and the new Aardman TV series are among the attractions at the 29th Encounters short film festival

By Robin Askew  Wednesday Sep 20, 2023

Bristol’s globally renowned Encounters short film festival returns for its 29th annual edition from September 27-October 1, with a programme at the Watershed that’s billed as being “vital and exciting”.

As usual, we can expect multiple selections of the best new international films. But this year, there’s also a special focus on homegrown talent with three opening night programmes of new shorts by budding talent from the south west. Among these is a documentary entitled Wicked and Bad, directed by UWE student Toni Lotta Groner. This follows Tyler Overall’s journey to prison, following his conviction for violent disorder at the March 2021 Kill the Bill protest.

Family-friendly events include an exclusive preview screening of Aardman Animation’s latest television series, Adventures of ArachnoFly. And Bristol actor Maisie Williams is bringing her Frank Film Club podcast to the festival for a workshop on finding your voice as a filmmaker.

This year’s festival also marks the passing of the torch from current CEO Rich Warren, who’s stepping down after 15 years in the post, to incoming Encounters Festival Director Bizzy Day, who will take over for next year’s  30th anniversary celebrations. “I’m delighted to be joining the fantastic team at Encounters ahead of its landmark 30th birthday next year,” says Bizzy. “The UK’s leading short film festival, Encounters is a true celebration of talent, creativity, diversity and short form moving image. I can’t wait to build on the incredible work of Rich and the team.”
