Movies’n’nosh returns to Bristol

By Robin Askew  Friday Apr 21, 2017

If you’re pining for the kind of movies’n’nosh experience pioneered locally by Cannoli & Gun, who packed away their aprons last year, you’re in luck. To kick off its next run of typically eclectic events, the ever-enterprising Bristol Film Festival launches a Beyond Popcorn series of films and ‘dining experiences’ with Stanley Tucci’s 1996 foodie flick Big Night at Averys’ on May 16.

Your hefty £60 ticket price gets you a sparkling wine reception, an introduction to the film by Festival Director Owen Franklin, and a post-screening three course Italian-themed feast courtesy of Cherry Picked catering, with wines selected by Averys’ resident experts.

Next up for BFF is another screening of the Sean Connery Bond classic Goldfinger on May 18. Nothing unusual about that, except that as part of the fest’s On Location series it’s taking place amid the expensive motors at the Aston Martin car showroom at Cribbs Causeway. Your ticket price for this one also gets you a glass of champagne or vodka martini on arrival. You do the joke.

Two more events at Averys follow. Back by popular demand on May 26 is that all-time classic, Casablanca, the twist this time being that it’s screened with a tasting of four carefully selected wines that have connections with the film’s key characters and locations – American, French and German. There’s even a wine from Casablanca.

Finally, on June 13 there’s a screening of the ever-popular Hunt for the Wilderpeople. This doesn’t just star Sam Neill, but he’s also supplying the wines for the tasting. Or rather, his own Two Paddocks vineyard is.
