Blade of the Immortal
Takashi Miike returns to the samurai bloodbath genre for his 100th project
Having successfully ‘platformed’ – as the film industry likes to put it – in London, The Disaster Artist finally reaches us this week along with a slew of other new releases. These include festive horror Better Watch Out, the blood-soaked Blade of the Immortal and Ai Weiwei’s documentary Human Flow. This weekend also sees the bulk of the Bristol Palestine Film Festival.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi pitches up on Thursday to dominate the box office over Christmas. Many cinemas have midnight previews on Wednesday night. If you’re more of an early bird, you can see it before going to work on Thursday, as the Vue Cribbs Causeway has a screening at 6:30am. It’s actually a big week for previews, partly because distributors want to get a head start on publicising the Christmas family films (Ferdinand, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) before everyone succumbs to the single-minded orgy of ill-tempered, drunken consumerism with which the birth of the Baby Jebus is traditionally celebrated. There are also arcane rules about public screenings of films to qualify for the upcoming awards season, which is why Molly’s Game is getting a single showing in several cinemas without any fanfare.
For your convenience, we’ve also grouped together all the Christmassy films, just because we care. As usual, follow the links for cinemas and screening times, and go here for our comprehensive film listings.
