Prepare for Arniegeddon!

By Robin Askew  Monday May 8, 2017

Not content with their outdoor spin-off Bristol Sunset Cinema, the ever-enterprising Bristol Bad Film Club has announced that it’s planning a foray into movie marathons under the Genre-geddon banner.

As the title suggests, Genre-geddon is a series of bum-numbing celebrations of genres and, just occasionally, stars. And it’s one of the latter who kicks it all off with a 70th birthday bash for Arnold Schwarzenegger (he’s been invited, but don’t hold your breath). Now don’t get the idea that just because this is organised by Bristol Bad Film Club they’ll only be screening bad Arnie flicks. Lord knows, there are plenty of those, including the Austrian Oak’s own laughable contribution to the pre-millennial tension strand of the armageddon genre, End of Days. Instead, they propose a celebration of his “best-loved and most entertaining movies”.

Which ones? They won’t tell us because they want it to be a surprise. All they will say is that there will be three of them screened back-to-back, and these will definitely not include Batman & Robin. We strongly urge you to demand your money back if the original Total Recall isn’t in there somewhere.

Arnie-geddon takes place at the Winston Theatre on Saturday 29 July. You’re encouraged to dress up as the man memorably described by Clive James as resembling “a condom full of walnuts”. Dodgy Austrian accents are also welcome. Advance tickets, price £12, are available here.

Next up in the Genre-geddon series is a 12-hour action B-movie onslaught in September. Watch this space for more details as we get ’em.
