Slapstick remembers festival stalwart Barry Cryer

By Robin Askew  Friday Jan 28, 2022

Among the many tributes to the late Barry Cryer was a heartfelt one from Bristol’s Slapstick Festival:

We are so saddened to hear the news that comedy legend and national treasure Barry Cryer has passed away. As you all know, Barry was a fantastic guest and friend of the festival. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

An enthusiastic supporter of Slapstick, Barry had taken part in its events for more than a decade.

Over the years, he appeared at the big annual gala, took part in a special edition of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and joined in with the spirit of the festival by planting a well-aimed custard pie on the face of Lee Mack.

Underlining his key role in British comedy, Barry also presented events celebrating the work of his many comedy partners, including Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise, Tommy Cooper, the Two Ronnies and Kenny Everett.

In addition, he was always keen to highlight the work of comedy legends even older than himself, introducing screenings of silent classics by everyone from Harold Lloyd to Buster Keaton.

This year, the 86-year-old was due to take part in An Audience with Barry Cryer at the Redgrave Theatre. Originally planned for January 29, the event was moved to March 27 because of Covid.
