Stop motion animated film launches Kickstarter to ensure future

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Apr 29, 2020

A Bristol filmmaker has launched a fundraising campaign to ensure his film can be made.

Salvation Has No Name, a 16-minute long stop motion animated short, is written and directed by Old Market-based Joseph Wallace.

He has launched a Kickstarter to make sure that, once lockdown is lifted, he can finish the film and employ Bristol talent to support the production.

The Kickstarter aims to raise £7,000, which will raise money to cover the loss of time and resources, hire a crew, shooting wide shots and finish post-production.

Salvation Has No Name explores xenophobia and the refugee crisis, and acts as a cautionary tale of what happens when people fear others’ differences.

The film had just begun filming at Aardman Animations when the lockdown came.

“It was heartbreaking,” says Joseph. “After spending many years working to get to this point, having to close everything down only a matter of weeks after we started shooting.

“We’re not ready to give up on this story and we really hope you’ll want to come on this journey with us.”

Joseph has been part of Bristol’s film and animation scene for some time, having curated the Bristol Festival of Puppetry and hosted events and discussions for the annual Encounters Film Festival.

“Bristol is such an energised and creative city,” says the film’s producer, Bristol-born Loran Dunn. “We thought if there was ever a city that could get behind their artists it was Bristol.”

To incentive people to donate to the campaign, the team behind the film have released perks, such as storyboard panels and tickets to the premiere.

“We’re calling now to the city of Bristol to support us,” Loran says. “Help us tell this important story.”
