Upcoming BBC drama, Chloe, set and filmed in Bristol

By Kit Abbott  Thursday Feb 3, 2022

A new BBC six-part drama Chloe is set to hit the small screen on Sunday.

Created by Alice Seabright, the series is filmed entirely in Bristol and surrounding areas. It features a wealth of talent, with Erin Doherty of Netflix’s The Crown at the forefront.

Locals may have seen filming take place over several weeks in Spring 2021 as the gritty psychological thriller made by Mam Tor Productions for BBC One and Amazon Studios features M Shed, College Green, Bristol Beacon, and the harbourside to name but a few prime locations.

Bristol Film Office assisted the production around these familiar sites, which also extended beyond the region in additional locations including Brean Down near Burnham on Sea, Uphill near Weston-super-Mare, and Ston Easton Country Park in Somerset.

Doherty takes the lead as Becky, a woman finding herself at a dead-end who becomes obsessed with the seemingly picture-perfect life of Chloe through social media. However, when Chloe dies unexpectedly, Becky takes on an alter-ego and infiltrates Chloe’s close-knit life, eventually risking it all as she becomes entrapped in her web of lies.

The Bottle Yard Studios in Hengrove became the production’s headquarters whilst filming took place. Chloe producer Joanna Crow says: “Bristol is a city that carries drama in its blood. The city is a theatre of opportunity with ready-made stages in its gorges, docks, colourful streets and vibrant harbourside.

Chloe has an idiosyncratic yet distinctively Bristol/South West look and sound, but its thrilling story of obsession and grief is universally relatable.”

Senior film manager at The Bottle Yard Studios Laura Aviles has described Chloe as an important TV drama, “with an intensely gripping, modern plot incorporating the timely theme of social media’s increasing prominence in our everyday lives”.

And on Bristol’s suitability for the setting of the thriller, Laura adds: “As is clear from the array of locations used in Bristol and the surrounding region, and the strong local crew-base that worked on the series, Mam Tor Productions found everything it needed on the doorstep of The Bottle Yard Studios.”
