Wallace & Gromit to return in new film

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jan 20, 2022

Since the most recent Wallace & Gromit adventure, Bristol’s most famous duo have been more accustomed to appearing in sculpture trails across the city than on the small screen.

But the pair will return in 2024 in an as-yet untitled new film, which will debut on the BBC in the UK and on Netflix in the rest of the world.

The new film will be directed by Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham, creative director of Wallace & Gromit at Aardman; but it will also be the first without Wallace being voiced by Peter Sallis, who died in 2017.

“The film sees Gromit becoming concerned that Wallace is a little too dependent on his inventions,” say the Aardman team from their headquarters on Spike Island.

“When Wallace’s ‘Smart Gnome’ develops a mind of its own, it falls to Gromit to battle sinister forces and save his master… or Wallace may never be able to invent again!”

The new film will be the second from Aardman following The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2005.

Wallace & Gromit first appeared in A Grand Day Out in 1989, followed by The Wrong Trousers in 1993, A Close Shave in 1995 and A Matter of Loaf and Death in 2008.

The news of the return of Wallace and Gromit comes as Aardman and Netflix have also announced the voice cast for upcoming feature film Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, due to be released in 2023.

Joining Thandiwe Newton (Ginger), Zachary Levi (Rocky), Bella Ramsey (Molly), Jane Horrocks (Babs), Imelda Staunton (Bunty) and Lynn Ferguson (Mac) will be Josie Sedgwick-Davies as Frizzle, David Bradley as Fowler, Romesh Ranganathan as Nick, Daniel Mays as Fetcher and Nick Mohammed as Dr Fry.
