The Love Witch
A feminist homage to '70s sexploitation flicks
You know how it goes: we generally get a horror glut up until Halloween, then it’s wall-to-wall sickly festive fare all the way until Christmas.
Fortunately for those of us who prefer the darker stuff, this year the Watershed has a very welcome Reclaiming the Witch season running throughout November to complement the release of Luca Guadagnino’s terrific ‘cover version’ of Suspiria. Curated by MA student Thea Berry, this fine selection of witchy flicks ranges from family favourite The Wizard of Oz to classy arthouse satire I am Not a Witch.
There’s also a gathering of the coven to put all this warty-snouted fun into perspective during an Exploring the Witch panel discussion on November 4. Taking part are Watershed Cinema Producer Tara Judah, writer and curator Anna Bogustkaya (The Final Girls), film writer and PhD candidate Kelli Weston, and Associate Professor of Film Dr. Shelley Cobb (University of Southampton).
