Watershed shortlisted for Cinema of the Year

By Robin Askew  Thursday Aug 18, 2016

Bristol’s Watershed is up against the likes of Manchester’s HOME, the Edinburgh Filmhouse and the Electric Cinema at Soho House in the 12-strong shortlist for Cinema of the Year in the ’24 screens and under’ category at this year’s prestigious Screen Awards, which recognise excellence in distribution, exhibition and marketing in the UK film industry.

This national recognition caps a busy 12 months for the ‘shed in the increasingly crowded Bristol cinema exhibition market.

Its commitment to inclusivity has seen the cinema embracing Deaf and hard of hearing audiences, introducing Deaf Conversations About Cinema events, training staff in deaf awareness and basic BSL (British Sign Language), hosting a BSL Celebration Day and embedding deaf access into the whole programme.

The cinema also introduced a new young person’s ticket permitting anyone aged 24 or under to see any film, on any day, at any time, for just £4.50. Additionally, it collaborates with young people to produce programmes and launched Rife magazine, Bristol’s online magazine created by young people for young people. Shamil Ahmed, a 23-year-old former Rife content creator, now sits on Watershed’s board.

Just last month, Watershed launched Cinema Rediscovered, the UK’s first festival dedicated to restorations of classic film. With a huge programme of digital restorations, early cinema rarities and contemporary classics, this proved a hit with audiences. Plans for next year’s edition are already afoot. Currently, the building is playing host to a month-long Roald Dahl celebration.

“Watershed is delighted to be shortlisted for this year’s Screen Awards,” says cinema curator Mark Cosgrove.

“As an independent cinema, it is rewarding to be recognised for our work and contribution to developing UK audiences for films across the globe.

“We are thrilled to be amongst such a formidable peer group and look forward to being part of this event, which recognises the contribution of important – but often overlooked – sectors from the film industry.”

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at The Brewery in London on Thursday, October 20.
