World’s worst film director comes to Bristol
If there’s one film that sums up the ethos of the Bristol Bad Film Club, it’s Tommy Wiseau’s 2003 drama, The Room. So popular is this “Citizen Kane of bad movies” that they screen it every year and it’s always a sell-out. In February 2017, however, they hit the mother lode. Mr Wiseau himself will be present for two screenings of his disasterpiece, signing autographs and answering questions about what has become a worldwide phenomenon.
In case you’ve never seen it, you need to know that The Room is at heart a love triangle story. Wiseau himself plays a banker who fears that his girlfriend may be cheating on him with his best friend (Greg Sestero). But this doesn’t begin to prepare you for the feast of ineptitude that follows, with its bizarre unresolved sub-plots, jaw-dropping performances, profoundly unerotic sex scenes and truly awful use of green screen.
is needed now More than ever
As if all this wasn’t exciting enough, you may require a change of underpants when you learn what Mr Wiseau is bringing with him. Bristol audiences are to be treated to exclusive footage from Best F(r)iends – his latest collaboration with best mate Sestero. Little is known about this, though the IMDB carries the following synopsis: “A drifter encounters a lonely mortician who takes him on a wild journey.”
2017 is certainly shaping up to be a big year for Wiseau and The Room enthusiasts. Sestero’s acclaimed memoir, The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, has been adapted as a big screen comedy-drama entitled The Masterpiece. Due for release at some point in 2017, this stars brothers James and Dave Franco as Tommy and Greg. James Franco also directs, and the film’s A-list supporting cast includes Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Bryan Cranston, Sharon Stone, Bob Odenkirk, Alison Brie, Zach Braff, Melanie Griffith, Josh Hutcherson and Jacki Weaver.
When the Bristol Bad Film Club folks announced they were bringing Greg Sestero to the Bierkeller for a Disaster Artist event last October, it sold out within days. So you’d be well advised to grab your tickets for The Room pronto.
The screenings take place at 7pm and 9.30pm at the Redgrave Theatre on Wednesday, February 15. Advance tickets, price £12.50, are available here. Oh and do bear in mind that while Mr Wiseau is happy to pose for photographs and sign autographs, he’d very much like you to buy some of his merchandise first. He’ll be laden down with mountains of swag, ranging from T-shirts to DVDs and watches.
