Arts Council Grassroots Music funding for Loco Klub
Bristol’s Loco Klub has been awarded a Grassroots Live Music project grant from Arts Council England, allowing the venue to continue its adventurous programme of music and performance.
The Loco Klub, located in the tunnels underneath Temple Meads, has become known for its diverse bookings, from opera and immersive classical music performances to Bristol’s best drum’n’bass and techno nights.
With its two spaces – the larger ashpits and the more intimate social club – The Loco Klub Loco prides itself on being an accessible venue that encourages local musicians, theatre companies and established and up-and-coming promoters to get out there to a bigger audience.

The importance of this kind of venue has clearly come to the Arts Council’s attention. When asked why they were now ring-fencing funding for this kind of organisations, ACE’s CEO Darren Henley commented: “Grassroots music venues are essential both for our world-renowned music industry and communities across the country, and there needs to be a collective effort from both the public sector and music industry to support them.
“With this fund we’re ensuring that grassroots venues and promoters working in genres such as rock, pop and hip-hop have the support they need to create the best possible environment for artists and audiences.”
Sarah Pugh, Company Manager of The Loco Klub says, “We are so pleased that Arts Council England are recognising the importance of smaller grassroots venues, and that The Loco Klub has been awarded this grant. The funding will make a big difference and will be used to improve our on-site facilities and enable us to update our in-house tech and increase accessibility for audiences as well as artists and performers. This will allow the Klub to extend its programme of delivery and increase its profile as an integral music and performance venue in Bristol.
“With ACE now looking at spaces like this as the cultural hubs they are, things are looking a bit more encouraging for performers and venues alike within the city. Venues like The Loco Klub are the beating heart of a city that thrives on its creative ventures and enabling a future for venues is an essential part of keeping Bristol’s music and art scenes alive.”
