Music / BBC Introducing

Bristol Music Blog #1

By Harriet Robinson  Monday Oct 9, 2017

Welcome to the first BMS Blog! If you don’t know about us, BMS stands for The Bristol Music Show, a collective which runs a radio show on BCfm, a YouTube channel and TV show. We also host gigs around the city.

The project began at BCfm Radio, which is a big supporter of home-grown talent. However, for a city that’s so famous for its music scene, we felt there wasn’t enough grassroots support, inspiring us to launch the radio show and then a year later, a Made in Bristol TV programme.

Independent journalism
is needed now More than ever
Keep our city's journalism independent. Become a supporter member today.

Every Monday night on BCfm from 8pm we play two hours of Bristol music, most of it new, sent through to bristolmusic@bcfmradio.com. We also host live sessions, exclusive 20-minute guest mixes from Bristol DJs, a regular gig guide from the legend that is Big Jeff and we discuss what’s happening in the local scene.

Not only can local musicians get played on The Bristol Music Show, but we recommend tracks to other shows on the station, with some of the favourites becoming playlisted across the schedule. We also have a good relationship with the BBC and often have interviews and songs repeated on “The Best of BCfm” on BBC Radio Bristol and even occasionally recommend artists to BBC Introducing in the West.

What we’ve been up to
In August we hosted our third Bristol Music Showcase. The music this time was a reflection of the psych, grunge and alternative scene with High Climbers, No Violet and Vena Cava at The Louisiana.

All three produce quite different sounds, but it worked well, building up to a (very) loud crescendo with headliners Vena Cava.

We’ve been playing all of the bands on the radio for some time and we’re particularly excited about new Bristol four piece No Violet who are re-invigorating grunge for 2017.

Check out their new single, America filmed live at the gig – this is released on Monday, October 23.

BMS News
On Monday, October 9 we’re joining forces with BBC Introducing in the West to celebrate 10 years of the scheme. As part of the team’s tour around the region, we’ll be broadcasting our BCfm radio show live from Friendly Records in Bedminster between 8 and 10pm where 10 Bristol acts are performing live.

We also recently filmed a beautiful live session with Elder Island in a Bristol restaurant… we’re very excited for you to see the video coming this month to our YouTube channel.

Radio
Listen in for live sessions on BCfm from Brook Tate (Monday, October 16) and Michaela (Monday, October 23)
