Bristol Music Blog #3

By Georgina Luton  Wednesday Dec 6, 2017

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for many, including The Bristol Music Show. We love to bring you the best in emerging music coming out of Bristol. Here is a bit about what we have been up to in the last month and what is coming up in December.

What we’ve been up to

Throughout November we have had an array of artists come into the studio to perform live sessions on BCfm Radio. China Bowls came in to perform her new single The Way ahead of its release on November 24.

Most recently, Kate Stapley joined us in the studio with her soft, acoustic twang before she headed off on tour with Slonk. Kate, originally from London, moved to Bristol for university and soon pursued her love of writing music and gigging around some of Bristol’s intimate venues. We asked Kate what it was she loved so much about the Bristol music scene compared to where she came from. Kate told us how she loves where she comes from, though Bristol has a supportive community where everyone with the same interests likes to help one another out, which makes it even more enjoyable when performing and trying to get your music heard.

You can listen back to these live sessions by visiting The Bristol Music Show on the BCFM Radio website.

BMS out and about

The Louisiana is one of many well renowned music venues in the city of Bristol, this year it turned 30 and to celebrate their 30th year they played host to lots of local artists. The Bristol Music Show went down to see live music from Bubba, Lice, Oh the Guilt and Human Bones as well as a handful more.

Did you know? The Louisiana got its name because the balcony outside reflects those of bars and public houses you will find in the US state of Louisiana.

Rough Trade Comes to Bristol

Rough Trade is world famous for bringing all vinyl lovers a place in which they can get their hands on a vast array of records. Rough Trade started as a small independent record shop in west London and is now expanding its horizons by opening a store on Nelson Street, Bristol. It will have the same feel to it as Rise which used to be on the triangle, with a performance area, cafe and bar space and of course, a collection of records for you to discover at your fingertips.

We can expect to see some great bands and artists coming to perform at Rough Trade. Already you can see Bristol band Idles kickstart the list of upcoming gigs at the store on December 16th and later on in the month expect appearances from Django Django, Field Music and Hookworms.

The legendary Rough Trade Records will be opening in Bristol on the 11th December. Put the date in your diary!

Help Save The Jam Jar

It probably sounds like a bit of a broken record by now, but as we all know, several smaller venues in the city of Bristol are at risk of closure due to a lack of funding. The Jam Jar is currently trying to raise £20,000 in a crowdfunding campaign to help sustain its establishment. There is more to The Jam Jar than meets the eye, some may see it as another music venue, but The Jam Jar has lot more has to offer to help Bristol’s creative community. The space offers studio facilities, art studios, a performance area and various services to help encourage creativity amongst the locals in Bristol.

You can support The Jam Jar’s crowdfunding campaign right here.

Coming up on the Radio in December

On the first Monday of every month, we have a guest mix from a Bristol DJ to get your month started with a bang. December’s mix comes courtesy of Revilo, a Bristol house DJ and producer; you can hear it on the December 4.

Also on December 4, tune in to hear an interview with emerging dubstep-meets-hip hop duo, MyStyle, who will be in to chat all about their music.

The Duval Project will be joining us in the studio on December 11, performing some live tracks from their new album.
