Bristol Urban Wassail set to return
After last year’s success, the Bristol Urban Wassail night is set to return to the Exchange.
The wassail is an ancient rural tradition of blessing orchards for a successful incoming harvest, and many such events happen around the time of twelfth night across the West Country.
This specifically Bristol event, however, promises a distinctly urban twist with an emphasis on participation and fun.
is needed now More than ever
Live music comes from scrumpy and western band Skimmity Hitchers who are renowned for their raucous and spontaneous live shows and love of real cider.
The support act comes from The Shinkickers, a side project of Bristol punk band The Surfin’ Turnips.
The night will also feature an (almost) traditional wassail play which will be performed by members of the audience.
Attendees can also expect to encounter home-made costumes, questionable accents and the gaffa taping of toast to Apple Tree Man. The event promises real cider will also be available on the bar.
Skimmity Hitchers frontman Tatty Smart said: “We’ve performed at wassails across the South West but urban Bristol deserves its own.
“Last year’s event was a triumph and we can’t wait to do it again. Come and pay homage to the city’s abandoned orchards, gnarly park trees and super strength cider-drinkers!”
