Bristol’s first female reggae dub sound system
A DJ who grew up in Montpelier is launching the city’s first female-powered sound system.
Sasha Steppa, a roots, dub and reggae DJ, who has been performing around Bristol, the UK and Europe for the past 10 years, has built her own sound system in collaboration with Qualitex Sound System.
Amidst a male-dominated industry, Sasha is striving to inspire and empower more women to pursue their musical dreams both locally and internationally – while working full time in the construction industry.
is needed now More than ever
With just a handful of women behind sound systems in the UK and few known ones across the globe, Sasha’s sound system launch event is set to go down in Bristol’s history.
Listen to the full interview with Sasha on Episode 67 of the Bristol24/7 Behind the Headlines podcast:
Her event, which will host a range of musical artists, will be held at the Malcolm X Community Centre in St Paul’s on Friday.
Sasha strives not just to get people dancing, but to also “to spread the message of the music which is peace, love and unity”.
She continued: “I want to create a place where all tribes are welcome. Come down and lock all of life’s troubles outside the door. Come in and feel uplifted, feel empowered, feel inspired and be reminded that you’re a beautiful person.
“That’s what I like to promote, this is what this event is about.”
