Buskers Banquet: The lockdown venture that fuses independent food with Bristol’s music scene

By Issy Packer  Wednesday Aug 17, 2022

A relatively new concept, Buskers’ Banquet is fusion of food and music, held at different venues in the city. Founded by George Crowther and Francis Reilly, they started the venture in lockdown, which aims give the food and the music equal attention with both topics so prevelant and important to the people of Bristol.

Each event hosts a different chef who comes out to speak to attendees about the food, as well as two musicians who perform two half hour sets. It is currently two musicians but George is hoping to expand this to include spoken word artists and poets at some point in the future.

Giving the power over to the chefs and musicians, chefs are able to have free reign over the kitchen, choosing what to cook and how many courses they want to do as long as it fits within the time constraints.

The artists booked for the events are chosen based on what is suitable for the venue, this could be a five piece acoustic set or a two piece band. But whatever it is, you can be sure it will pair nicely with the dishes served.

The events are held seasonally to keep it as fresh as possible with the next one being held in September across 9 nights. This meant that George had to find 9 different chefs, 18 different artists and 6 different venues.

“My biggest learning curve was getting in touch with people ahead of time,” George tells Bristol24/7. Curating several nights worth of music and food combined has been a challenge but also a huge success.

“We’ve had a good reception so far. For the first few events people came on their own and met people as we have one long table for everyone to sit at,” George tells us. “Then, at the next events people were turning up with those they had met previously.”

Creating a friendly and intimate atmosphere is one of the main goals of these events as well as showcasing some of the talented artists and chefs the city has to offer.

The Buskers’ Banquet is a welcome addition to the food and music scene in Bristol.
