Celebrating ten years of the Gallimaufry

By Martin Booth  Friday Mar 25, 2022

The story of the Gallimaufry – which is celebrating its tenth birthday on Saturday – is the story of two James’: James Koch and James Smailes.

The pair first met when James Smailes was manager at the former Fez Club on St Nicholas Street in the Old City and James Koch was propping up the bar and later putting on club nights.

The two James’ first went into business together running the Colour Inn next to Clifton Down station before opening the Gallimaufry in what was previously the Prom.

For James Koch, the Galli is first and foremost a pub. “We serve local real ale, Bristol beer. We serve quality locally-sourced freshly-made produce, and we are also a music venue.

“It does evolve through the day from being more of a coffee shop into more of a lunch spot and then gradually the music goes up, the lights get lower and every evening there will be some live music.”
