Creative lockdown: Sønder Choir
Sønder Choir are part of the ongoing Bristol24/7 Creative Lockdown series, showcasing how people in Bristol have been getting arty under lockdown.
A vocal collective specialising in gospel and soul, Sønder Choir have been finding new ways to create and share music during lockdown.
After moving their rehearsals onto Zoom, the choir then decided to record a cover of Stand By Me by Ben E King.
is needed now More than ever
“We are a choir with a message of love and joy at its core, so new this was now more important than ever before to be proactive in sharing our music,” says choir co-director, Charlie Smith.
Charlie explains how they recorded the piece: “The process began with our keys player Martin Robinson who first recorded a video for our lead singer JJ Stanbury to sing to.
“Next, each member of the choir individually recorded a video of themselves singing to that. This was then mixed and edited by Martin Robinson and Sam Powell.”
After the success of their first song, the choir are now recording their second virtual cover, For Every Mountain, to “encapsulate our feelings of immense gratitude to all the key workers who have been working tirelessly to keep us safe, educate our children and help us through”.
Charlie says: “We wanted to share a message of unity and remind those that are alone that we are together whilst still being apart.”
