Creative lockdown: Vox in Frox
Vox in Frox are part of the ongoing Bristol24/7 Creative Lockdown series, showcasing how people in Bristol have been getting arty under lockdown.
An all-female choir based in Chew Valley, Vox in Frox has been performing since 2013.
In response to their spring concert being cancelled as a result of the pandemic, the choir has released a video to raise money for Mothers for Mothers, a Bristol-based charity supporting families affected by maternal mental illness.
is needed now More than ever
“We always like to raise money at concerts for a charity that is close to our hearts,” says Caroline Lowe, who runs the choir. “Mothers for Mothers would have benefitted this time, so we have released the video so that the charity won’t miss out.
“We set a target of £1,000 but as that was exceeded during the premiere we have now placed it at £1,500.”
The choir, working with Bristol Brass Consort, pianist Claire Alsop and sound mixer and picture editor Adam Palmer, recorded a virtual performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water.
“When I was a new mum myself I struggled,” Caroline says. “I can’t imagine how hard it must be to cope with young motherhood in the present lockdown.”
Mothers for Mothers, which opened in 1981, is still supporting families affected by maternal mental illness across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset during the pandemic.
The charity offers support to women during pregnancy and until their youngest child attends school through their support services and were awarded the Maternal Mental Health Alliance Perinatal Peer Support Award in 2018.
“Singing keeps us all sane,” Caroline says. “So it is good to give something back.”
