Dev from Idles on lockdown, gigs and mental health

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Apr 15, 2020

The bass guitarist of Idles is the latest guest on Thekla’s weekly podcast, Isolation Discs.

Adam Devonshire, better known as Dev, chooses a variety of songs that he is enjoying during isolation as well as being interviewed by podcast host Chris Arnold.

Dev talks about subjects including his naughty cat, the band’s early years, music videos, DJ sets and dealing with poor mental health while on tour.

On the podcast, he revealed that playing Glastonbury on the Park Stage in 2019 has been the “favourite gig we’ve ever done. Easily.”

“We dreamed about playing that slot and that stage from day one so to have the opportunity to do that, it was a real wonderful thing,” he said.

“Walking out on stage and hearing the response from the crowd, I was welling up, I was gone before we’d even played a note.”

Dev said that the band learnt a lot about each other on that summer’s tour: “We learnt a lot about ourselves more, and to recognise when someone might not be doing too well with their mental health.

“Everything’s a learning curve in life and we’ve become very aware throughout the last few years with being in tune with the people around and making sure everyone’s okay.”
