‘Family-friendly’ rave to take place in Knowle West

By Charlie Watts  Tuesday Aug 2, 2022

A rave is set to take place in a children’s playpark in south Bristol.

The “family-friendly” event at Newquay Road Playground in Knowle West will be centred around a wheelie bin which doubles as a sound system.

Running from 4.30-7pm on Thursday, August 4, it will also feature a BBQ and activities in art, dance and sports.

Every week for the last three months, Growing Streets Together team leader Barney Scott Rhythm has been bringing his wheelie bin sound system to Newquay Road Playground, to host music sessions.

The purpose of the project, which has previously taken place in Hartcliffe and Whitchurch, is to “bring community cohesion between young and old”.

For the upcoming rave, the wheelie bin will be used for playing tunes, music-making workshops and karaoke sessions.

Barney said: “With Knowle West, there’s so much talent and the sense of community is really strong.

“But a community can sometimes turn on itself and there can be a divide somewhere.

“So I think the importance of coming together in celebration is that we get to see each other in a different light.”

Newquay Road, where the rave is planned, has previously made headlines for being “the most anti-socal street in Bristol”.

Grassroot Communities also runs a bike club at Newquay Road Playground and has hopes to open a BMX track around there.
