“This is a very sad time for all of us at the Bierkeller, there have been some historic gigs over the years,” the statement added.
The most famous gig at the All Saints Street venue was the first and only Bristol show for Nirvana on November 4 1991, with tickets costing £6.
Other acts who have played there over the years included Arctic Monkeys, Ash, Biffy Clyro, Jane’s Addiction, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Royal Blood and the Stone Roses, as well as theatre, comedy and club nights.

Fans of the venue have reacted with sadness to its sudden closure.
“Absolutely gutted,” wrote Rebecca Dee. “The Bierkeller was part of my youth .and has come back into my life (in a way) in the last few years! I seen SKIN play here so many times, Little Angels on their farewell tour (sweat fest that was) and many other bands to many to list. A sad day for live music in Bristol.”
Lewis Noble said: “I’m so sorry to hear. Bristol bierkeller was the place to go whilst growing up in my late teens and early twenty’s. The only decent place to have metal night club and so many rest memories from it. The best gig I seen was Chimaira.
“Broke my nose in the pit and blood was fucking every where. I also had some low times there when I had my head kicked in whilst in the Keller.i was rushed to hospital that night.but it did t stop me going again and again and again. Thanks for the memories.”
Amanda J Cawston said: “Omg that’s can’t be true! The Bierkeller is part of Bristol heritage! What an utter utter shame & disappointment to the thousands that have been here over the years. Wow hard to actually believe & digest. I’m sure Bristol won’t quite be the same without this magnificent venue. So so sad for all.”
Penny Sarah Carey wrote: “Ah gutted. Saw Nirvana, Lush, PJ Harvey and many other great gigs there. The Moonflowers gig there was a blast too. Spent many great nights at the Kandy Klub when it was there too. Thanks for the memories.”
And Alex Morrice wrote: “Ah, the Keller. Lost my best handbag there when some guy weed on it by a speaker. Happy happy days.”
