A first look inside M Shed’s ‘Bristol Music: Seven decades of sound’

By Rhys Buchanan  Friday May 18, 2018

There’s been an awful lot of excitement about this brand new exhibition at M Shed. Bristol Music: Seven decades of sound aims to take the visitor on a journey through the history of the city’s bustling music scene.

As we’re led through the multi-room immersive experience, finishing touches are just being put in place before the first public opening on Saturday. Without giving too much away, here’s a few photos from our initial experience.

The entrance corridor is filled with booths from the seven decades which give a snapshot of each era through memorabilia, quotes and short ten minute videos.

The M Shed drew on their own archives as well as a big public appeal to gather memorabilia, photographs, personal stories and memories. From the initial idea to the finished product it took a total of around two years to complete.

The exhibition opens up into every day music experiences, whether that’s shopping for music, the top forty important singles that have come out of the city and some samples from the national press.

Key names within the scene have spoken about some of their favourite venues in a section focussing on the many legendary music hubs past and present in Bristol.

There’s also the chance to soak up some fantastic photography from the local music scene in recent years.

An interactive Bristol music re-mapped section will ask public questions and getting them to respond, adding their stories and memories on the walls.

There’s even a Careoke booth where people can sing along to some Bristol favourites. It’s lovingly decorated with some local favourite artist names like Idles, The Blue Aeroplanes and Fresh Four.

Rough Trade Bristol have got a pop up shop in the main foyer so once you’re inspired you can get your hands on that sought after vinyl.

Bristol Music: Seven decades of sound opens to the public on Saturday May 18th.
