Fundraiser announced to raise money for striking workers

By Issy Packer  Wednesday Jun 28, 2023

Bass Choir, Dave Harvey, Felix Joy Mike Shawe and Boca 45 will be taking to the stage for a charity fundraiser with all profits being split between local union branches’ strike funds.

This will be the third event in solidarity with striking workers; the first event which took place in January raised £2100 and the second, which took place at the end of May, raised just short of £2,000.

Hosted by Steve Rice and Chris Farrell, the team hope more people follow in their footsteps.

“We helped some people in Oxford in between those dates and they put on a sell out gig,” Steve tells Bristol24/7.

“The Galluimufry did a small one in March and raised nearly £1000, we are hoping more people follow what we are doing.”

Taking place at Lost Horizon on July 7, the third fundraiser promises to be a funk filled disco with a drum and bass all female choir.

On the importance of supporting striking workers, Steve explains: “We both feel that the vital things we rely on are under threat and that the strikes get very negative reaction in general from the media.

“Our experience is that people are behind it in a big way but there is so much other diversity in the news that this cause fades from people’s memory.

“We just want to help the strikers who are suffering financially for their efforts and to keep it in peoples minds.”

Despite being outside of the union movement, Chris and Steve recognise the work, effort and determination their members have taken to defend the interests of everyday people.

“As two self employed DJs we wanted to show a little solidarity the only way we knew how, by putting on parties,” Chris tells us.

“The plan was to get some DJs together who held a similar view and raise some money for the strike funds of those taking industrial action. No one wants to strike and it hits those taking part in the pocket.

“In our own small way we want to make a contribution to the efforts of others and show there is support from the clubbing scene.”
