Godfather of bhangra heads to Bristol

Alaap head to Bristol once again for an evening of bhangra at St George’s.

Fronted by the UK’s “Godfather of bhangra” Channi Singh OBE, Alaap have been going strong since 1977. Fusing the traditional sounds of the Punjab with western influences and this gig forms part of an Asian Arts Agency series.

Bhangra developed into the trademark British Asian sound. Channi was a pioneer of this new sound and has continued to drive the scene forward ever since. Alaap have performed with UB40, at Madison Square Garden in New York, Al Nasr Indoor Stadium in Dubai, and Royal Albert Hall in London.

In 1992, Alaap became the first Asian British bhangra band to perform in Pakistan. Channi was awarded a Lifetime Achievement for Punjabi music from the Lord Mayor of Leicester and appointed an honorary Senior Lecturer of Music at Liverpool University. In 2012, Channi was appointed OBE for services to bhangra music, charity, and the community in Hounslow. He has composed music for Feroz Khan’s films and Bollywood films such as Yalgaar, Shaktimaan, Janasheen and Top less.
