Goldie Lookin Chain: Banksy, traxedos & Kanye

By Laura Williams  Sunday Jul 5, 2015

You’re playing Grillstock – what makes a good BBQ for you guys?
For us the perfect BBQ is all about peanut butter, pineapple and jalapeño peppers. Combine this flavoursome treat with a slab of hot beef and you instantly have what we refer to as a Hawaiian beef fantasy. For added greatness add a giant sound system some fine ales and a decent toilet et voila. Pure meaty goodness.  Hello Grillstock!

What would you say to anyone who had you pegged as a novelty act?
Over the years we have been called many things and the term novelty act is often banded around, we spoke with our lawyers about this and technically we can’t be labelled a novelty act until we get one of those giant ostrich costumes and a dancing dog on stage. Something we strive to achieve by the end of 2017.

Where do you get your song-writing inspiration from?
Most of the influence for song-writing comes from sifting through YouTube videos whilst drinking Lidl wine. The first time we saw a cat saying “no no no no no” over and over again was mental, Adam wrote two songs in a row immediately afterwards, then we got the line cut because no one paid the rental so nothing got written for six weeks.

If you had to use one word to describe each member of the band, what would it be?
This one’s easy. The key word that covers every single member of the band is “damaged” either physically, mentally or both. Without a doubt there is a whole lot of baggage when you get us all together in a tour bus.

How do you rate Bristol?
Bristol is without a doubt one of the most awesome places we have ever been and we have been as far as Japan, LA and Glasgow. Bristol rocks not only for the high quality local tobacco but the vibes are always positive and even the graffiti is wicked, Newport gets a few swear words and a picture of a willy painted on a wall, Bristol has a bloke called Banksy that paints pictures of mice and stuff that sell for a million quid a time.  F*cking legend.

How do your outfits vary between summer and winter?
Summer shows this year are taking a lot more of a high energy look. Many of the boys are working with a hybrid tracksuit crossed with a posh evening wear vibe, this is what we call the traxedo. Winter usually involves a lot more straight nylon and balaclavas. Classic look.

Who would you love to play with on a festival bill?
I think the best line up would be to get Led Zeppelin to open the show for us and then a three hour freestyle from Adam Hussain. We would probably break for a rich spaghetti meal and then end the show by doing a six hour extended live remix of our classic party anthem Your Mother’s Got A Penis.

What’s the cleverest thing you’ve ever done?
I think the cleverest thing I ever did was to help angry rapper Kanye West pass his GCSEs maths exam. Beat maker and egotist West has never been too steady with figures so it was a pleasure to help him with his algebra, which he needed in order to get his UK work visa.

You look like you have fun on the road – what’s the most fun you’ve ever had on tour?
I think the best fun we ever had was when we decided to fill our tour bus with livestock and try a full European tour. Have you ever tried sleeping on top of a goat whilst hurtling down the motorway towards the Reeperbahn in Germany? It’s like being Grizzly Adams but with a drug dependency issue.

What’s the worst thing anyone’s ever said about you?
One time I was called a waste of skin and a complete letdown to society: but shortly afterwards my dad heard we had a multi-million pound record deal, so he apologised.???

And the best?
One time I got called the nicest man to ever wear a tracksuit and the best vocalist the UK rap scene has ever witnessed, funnily enough it was by my dad shortly after we got signed for multi-million pound record deal.

Tell us something about you we won’t know…
Besides being a rapper, I am also a keen fan of horror films and hold the world record for longest duration spent in bed terrified of being murdered by a flesh-eating goblin, although this has never been clarified I can demonstrate to you if you just come round my house with some horror DVDs and a bag of cans.

Goldie Lookin Chain play a sold out gig at Bristol Grillstock on Saturday July 11. Tickets for Sunday July 12, featuring The Heavy and Kitty Daisy & Lewis still available from: www.grillstock.co.uk/bristol-festival
