Hazz/Blues Fest preview: Paradox Ensemble
Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival, Lantern, Friday March 6
This brash and brassy contemporary 9-piece combo will have no trouble lighting the Festival touchpaper on Friday. Their compulsive dance grooves hitched to modern jazz orchestrations have links to the lively Manchester scene of Riot Jazz and Beats & Pieces.
It’s good time music full of clever stuff from the latest generation of young players, part of a leftfield strand in the Lantern across the weekend that also includes remarkable vocalist Alice Zawadski (Saturday 7) and the jazz-hop soundscapes of Slowly Rolling Camera (Sunday 8).
Festival programmer Denny Ilett says: It’s really important we showcase these young, contemporary jazz artists
