Hear Charivari & Iceman Furniss split single
Noctone is a Bristol-based label dedicated to “uneasy listening”. In practice this means anything from post-punk guitar noise to leftfield electronics, the common thread being that sense of adventure that inspires so much of this city’s best music.
The label first caught our attention in August with the first instalment of their podcast The Void, which featured Bristol24/7 favourites such as Twin, Landslide Purist, Repo Man and Kayla Painter. It also featured music from elsewhere the UK with great contributions from Bridget Hayden (Leeds) and Fever Dream (London).
is needed now More than ever
Noctone have just dropped their first proper record release, and it’s wonderful. A limited edition split 12″ featuring tracks by Charivari and Iceman Furniss Quintet, it fully sets out their stall as a label to keep your eyes on in 2017.
At 8 minutes, 24 seconds, Charivari‘s Purge is a generous helping of mournful, feedback-drenched noise rock that howls like a bereaved dog on a smoke-strewn battlefield. Charivari are technically from Bath but we’ll try not to hold it against them. They make a huge sound and we can’t wait to catch them live.
The other side of the disc features Iceman Furniss Quintet, whose 18.07.16 is a typically fiery improvised freak-out of punk, dub and jazz. Fronted by cornet wielding man-about-town Harry Furniss, the IFQ are among Bristol’s most compelling live bands at the moment, and they sound equally wonderful in your headphones.
Purge / 18.07.16 is available now direct from the bands, at live shows or online at www.noctone.co.uk/product/noct01. Grab a copy now before they sell out.
