Interview: Dan Patlansky

By Jonathon Kardasz  Wednesday Apr 26, 2017

Dan Patlansky is one of the finest of a fabulous field of blues guitar players currently releasing records and touring like it’s the 20th century (when you needed two designs of tour t-shirt to fit all the tour dates on). His latest waxing Introvertigo has been garnering critical praise, harvesting sales and scooping up awards and he brings the album (and more) to the Tunnels on May 5th. Part of his visa requirement was to submit to the vinyl enquirer, so here’s what he had to say:

What was the first record you ever bought and where did you buy it?

The first album I ever bought with my own money was Jimi Hendrix Axis: Bold As Love on cassette. I found it in a local record store in Johannesburg very close to where I grew up. It felt special to buy an album with my own money, I was about 9 years old.

What was the most recent record you bought and where did you buy it?

The last record I bought was on iTunes and it was self-titled album from a band called Buffalo Killers.

What record do you stick on the deck to sooth your soul?

The record that always does it for me is Ray Charles King of Cool, putting that record on makes me forget the existence of an outside world.

Have you bought a record on the basis of a great single and then been disappointed by the rest of the album? If so, tell us all about it…

Never really been a single music buyer, so I can’t say I’ve ever been in that situation. I’m more into full albums and how the songs work as a whole.

What record do you turn up to maximum to get in to that party mood?

There a band called Lettuce, they are an old school funk band with the deepest groove and pocket known to beast or man, their album Fly is my go to one.

If we had the ability to land you at the recording of one classic LP so you could witness the whole recording process, what would you choose and why?

It would have to Sergeant Pepper’s by the Beatles, probably one of my favourite records ever. It would be awesome to see the process and how things went down.

Ever bought a record solely because you liked the sleeve? If so, what was it and did it delight you or disappoint you?

Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here cover got me instantly intrigued to what the music sounded like when I was a kid; of course I became an instant fan. Floyd album artwork has always been a big part of the experience for me.

Oh no, your house is burning down and you can only rescue one record! What would it be and why?

Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood, it’s been the most influential album on my playing and it was one of the first I owed and has been with me since the beginning.

What’s your favourite record sleeve? Tell us all about it (and whether or not the music gives you as much pleasure as the sleeve).

Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, as mentioned before the cover blew my mind. The feeling the artwork gave me was mirrored perfectly by the music on the record, which I think is a very rare thing these days, in fact it’s the only album where that has been the feeling for me.

Morbidity alert: what record would you like played at your funeral?

Weather Report’s Heavy Weather, Whoever is left at the funeral after the record is done deserve to be there!
